In Memoriam: Joan Miller

Joan Miller

The genealogy blogging community has lost not just a dedicated blogger, but a colleague and friend who was just as committed to encouraging and mentoring others as she was to her genealogy research. GeneaBloggers notes the passing of Joan Miller of the Luxegen blog this past Friday, January 4, 2013, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

I was notified via email early Sunday morning by Joan’s husband Reg and I was immediately saddened by the news. I had the pleasure of meeting both Joan and Reg several times since our first meeting at the Arizona Family History Expo in Mesa, Arizona in late January 2010.  At the time I was just starting my speaking engagements and there was an immediate bond with Joan once we met.

Yes we had worked together online for almost a year, encouraging each other in our efforts to make the genealogy community comfortable with the use of social media. But Joan was so much more than a genealogist and you knew that the moment you met her. After that first meeting you walked away with a new friend and one that was intelligent, funny, upbeat . . . a stellar person.

Please keep Joan’s family in your thoughts and prayers at this time and I encourage members of GeneaBloggers and the genealogy community to consider two endeavors:

  • If you were touched by Joan’s good works and loving personality, in person or online, write an online tribute and post it to your blog or social media.
  • In addition, Joan’s family has encouraged participation in the Genealogists for Families project at Kiva in the form of loans to struggling entrepreneurs. The Kiva program fits perfectly with what Joan believe in and her way of mentoring and encouraging others.

I spent much of Sunday notifying members of our community and it wasn’t until late, late in the day that the reality of our loss sunk in. Peace out my dear friend. I am a much better person for having known you, brief as it has been. You’ll be missed. but not forgotten.

  1. A lovely tribute, Thomas. Living on the other side of the world, I did not have an opportunity to meet Joan in person, and I envy you that. Her warm, caring nature came through clearly in our on-line correspondence. Joan and I were very grateful for your support of the ‘Genealogists for Families’ project, especially the advice you gave us in those early months.

  2. Since I’ve started blogging in 2009 several genealogy bloggers have passed away. It would be nice if there was a honor roll at the Geneabloggers website as a memorial for all our fallen genealogists. Is that something that would be not too difficult to put together?
