  1. Jason Sudeikis has such a wry and wonderful sense of humor that he was able to learn of his family’s tragedies–the whole pattern of fathers leaving their sons–and almost seem to take it in stride. I like the way the show, and Jason too, zoomed right in on the most important question: what caused this repeated lack of parenting, almost a despair about parenting?

The conclusion was really moving. His great-great grandfather, who undertook to be the “new country” parent of so many children immigrating from Lithuania, was killed in a coal mine explosion . . . leaving all those children without a father. I blame the mine owners for not creating safer working conditions . . . but it just goes to show that social forces and injustices can pressure family ties and even break them. Good for Jason’s dad for breaking the cycle! And good for Jason for keeping his sense of humor through the entire odyssey!
