I have the pleasure of introducing you to Lori Hellmund of the Genealogy and Me blog: My Journey Through the World of Genealogy.
Lori has always been interested in her family history, but seriously started researching and keeping notebooks about six years ago.
Lori’s Family and Her Blog
The fact that Lori is writing a blog surprised most of her family members. Lori’s brothers and her son all author novels and plays, but family members had no idea she could write “anything!” Lori has received some very positive reactions from family and friends about her blog.
Several people receive her blog updates by way of email and a couple family members do “follow” her on Blogger. Since certain family members are from different branches of her tree, not all posts may concern their particular family, but they very much enjoy reading her posts regardless.
Lori has told her family most of the stories she writes about on her blog but she feels they get more out of the story when seeing it in print.
How Lori Follows the Rest of Us
Lori uses Blogger, to follow most blogs but may also use Google Reader from time to time. Lori also has some of her favorites “linked to” from her blog and goes directly to the blog site from there.
Lori especially enjoys checking out the list of New Genealogy Blogs every week on GeneaBloggers. The only problem is not having as much time as she would like to read them all. Lori feels the genealogy blogging community is wonderful and a great source of inspiration.
On a typical day, Lori may be able to read about 10 to 15 blog posts a day, sometimes more. In Lori’s own words, “I think the only thing that saves me is the fact that not everyone posts each and every day!”
Lori does receive about five updates in her email. One favorite that shows up in her inbox is the Finding Josephine blog by Dionne Ford.
Lori’s Thoughts on Blogging
Lori’s first concern about blogging was that she wouldn’t have interesting things to say, and second, that anyone would care whether or not she had anything to say. After a few months, she finally went to Blogger.com and read how to start a blog. She felt confident that creating and having a blog was something she could do. One of the first genealogy blogs Lori read was Caroline Pointers Family Stories blog, “I had never seen anything like it before!”
The first day Lori started blogging, she received so much encouragement from Thomas MacEntee over at GeneaBloggers along with numerous other fellow bloggers.
Lori truly enjoys being a part of the geneablogging family and feels it is an honor to be able to read the stories of so many people who share in her passion for family history. Lori finds there are so many that are knowledgeable and helpful to her as she travels on her genealogy journey.
