Genealogy Blogging Beat – Wednesday 13 August 2014

Aug 13, 1961. Early in the morning, the East German government closed the border between the east and west sectors of Berlin with barbed wire to discourage further population movement to the West. Telephone and postal services were interrupted, and later in the week, a concrete wall was built to strengthen the barrier between official crossing points. The dismantling of the wall began Nov 9, 1989.
