You are here – Social Bookmarking for Genealogy

Amid all the news coming out of the NGS annual conference in Salt Lake City last week, I fear that one important item may have been overlooked especially by genealogy bloggers.

This week announced the presence of a new site called which is a social bookmarking site similar to Digg or StumbleUpon.  If you have a genealogy blog – or even if you don’t but you read genealogy-related blogs or news – you should check out

What Is Social Bookmarking?

Social bookmarking is method in which Internet user can catalog, search and share bookmarks to other websites usually around an area of interest such as genealogy.  Popular bookmarking sites include StumbleUpon, Digg and Diigo.  In fact Diigo has a great Genealogy Research Resources group of bookmarks created by Denise Olson of Family Matters.

How Can Social Bookmarking Help My Blog?

Not only does social bookmarking provide an easy way to find resourceful sites focused on a specific area of interest like genealogy, but having your blog or blog posts “bookmarked” can boost your readership.  When you upload your site to the list of bookmarks you are extended your “reach” and offering more options for others to discover your content.

In addition, from an SEO standpoint, the more links to your blog, the better your search engine ranking at sites such as Google.  For some bloggers, especially those who run a business and a blog is part of their marketing plan, this is important.

Won’t  Posting at Decrease My Visits or Traffic?

In an email conversation with Scott Dimmick, product manager for, he stated that your site or post won’t be robbed of traffic just because it is posted at their site.  Just like Digg or StumbleUpon, the “frame” or “toolbar” will only show up for registered members of not for guests.  And this can easily be disabled by clicking the “x.”

What Are the Advantages of Using

For blog readers, GenealoGee provides a way to check out blog posts and sites focused just on genealogy.  For bloggers, you can post your articles and include them in the ever-growing list of bookmarked sites.  One benefit of a site like GenealoGee: for folks who don’t want to bother with RSS feeds and Google Reader, it is an easy way to read genealogy blogs and other genealogy-related news.

On a personal note, I’ve joined and have bookmarked my own posts here at GeneaBloggers and at Destination: Austin Family.  I’ve been using StumbleUpon for the past year and I’ve really seen an increase in the number of readers from social bookmarking. is easy to use and I can bookmark a new post in under a minute.
