Geneabloggers Week In Review

This is a weekly feature which will document some of the geneablogger happenings.

For most readers it must seem like I change the location and name of this post too often, but this week there is good reason: with the recent Facebook Terms of Use fiasco many geneabloggers have disabled and deleted their Facebook accounts.  I am trying to make sure that includes most if not all of the items listed over at Geneabloggers Group on Facebook in an effort to be more inclusive.

Geneabloggers Group on Facebook

We’ve added 6 new members for a total of 373 members but the count is a bit misleading since we lost quite a few members who cancelled their Facebook accounts due to the issues surrounding Facebook’s Terms of Service (see below).

Check out Genea-Bloggers group listing on Facebook. If you know anyone who blogs about their genealogy or family history and you think they might benefit from membership in Geneabloggers please let me know and send me their email info!

Genealogy Blog Carnivals

16th Edition of the Carnival of Central and Eastern European Genealogy over at Jessica’s Genejournal with entries due on Sunday, February 22nd.

1st Edition of the Graveyard Rabbits Carnival hosted by the Association of Graveyard Rabbits with entries due on Wednesday, February 25th.

Weekly Genealogy Blogging Prompt

Check out Weekly Genealogy Blogging Prompt #7:  Share your holiday traditions. How did you spend the 4th of July? Did the fire truck ever come to your house on Thanksgiving? Share your memories of all holidays, not just the December ones.

Don’t forget the upoming Scanfest this Sunday, February 22nd from 11am – 2pm Pacific time.  If you’ve never participated in Scanfest and want to learn how to scan photos and documents along with a lively group discussion via instant messaging, then join Miriam and her gang of merry scanners on Sunday!

Note: a new chat format will be used beginning this Sunday and past participants of Scanfest are urged to read more about it and give it a test run before Sunday!

Geneabloggers Calendar

Don’t forget to check out other upcoming events at the new Geneabloggers Calendar.  This is the same Google calendar that has been in existence for quite some time.

Facebook Terms of Use and Geneabloggers

You probably have read and even saw news articles or broadcasts on television about the uproar concerning Facebook’s recent, unannounced changes to their Terms of Use.   In a nutshell (I will post about this policy change and how it affects Geneabloggers later today), Facebook attempted to claim ownership to member content even after members left Facebook.

What Facebook attempted to do – but backed down by week’s end due to a high number of account deletions and bad press – is radical when compared to the terms of service of other major Internet sites such as Google, Yahoo, etc.

  1. It makes no sense that Facebook would risk messing up a good thing by edging in on people’s intellectual property. They had people’s trust and then they go and risk losing it; not smart.

I heartily support your decision to place information here in a centralized place. This is creating an lot of extra work for you but it will pay off because it’s really hard to keep track of things in different places.
I am keeping my Facebook account because it is a useful tool in some ways, but it’s not the center of my universe.
I always check in here for new and appreciate seeing these summaries.
