I have the great pleasure of introducing you to Terri O’Connell of the Finding Our Ancestors blog.
Terri blogs about her ancestors and the research journey she took to find them. She also shares the process she is going thru which includes joining DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), and taking classes through the National Institute of Genealogical Studies.
Terri started researching her family history in 1999 and created her blog in October of 2008. After making headway on a family line that was difficult for other family members to locate, Terri felt a genealogy blog would be a great way to keep track of research, progress made, and how each new discovery affected her.
During 2008, Terri’s focus was on her O’Connell line and her blog, Climbing the O’Connell Family Tree. Since then, Terri moved her blog from Blogger over to WordPress, changing the name of her blog to Finding Our Ancestors. Terri felt she would have better luck on other branches in her family tree if she no longer had to focus on just one family line.
Terri feels the research posted on her blog, leaves a legacy for her children and their children, hoping that descendants will enjoy the information she has been able to uncover.
Terri’s Family and Her Blog
Terri has a few family members that have read her blog but most have said little to her about it. With the love of digging things up, Terri’s mom feels she missed her calling in life and felt, “she should have been a reporter!”
Terri’s niece, Samantha is most likely to be the only family member that follows her blog. The remainder of her family will just read a post when Terri sends an email, advising them to read of a wonderful family discovery she has made.
How Terri Follows the Rest of Us
Terri uses Google Reader to stay current with other genealogy blogs. She does receive about five to 10 posts by way of email so she doesn’t miss her favorite genealogy blog posts.
There is no set number on how many blogs Terri follows. In her own words: “there are so many great genealogy blogs out there, it is hard to keep up with all of them.” Terri also looks to Twitter and Facebook to catch the latest genealogy blog news.
Terri’s Thoughts on Blogging
Terri had very little concerns about blogging other than writing. She had never really considered herself a writer and had concerns as to how to put thoughts into words. At times she felt her thoughts were jumbled together, making it difficult to separate and make sense for others to read. While Terri had always kept track of her research, she had never given much thought to others outside the family that may read her work.
