I have the pleasure of introducing Mavis Jones of the Georgia Black Crackers genealogy blog!
Mavis has been researching her African-American family history off and on over the last 20 years. Caring for her Aunt Martha stricken with Alzheimer’s Disease and working full-time had limited her research time. With her mother’s support and providing the title, Georgia Black Crackers was created!
Mavis’s Family and Her Blog
While not many relatives read her blog – with the exception of her mother – Mavis says that her mom is very proud of the site. Friends and family also depend on Mavis to share family history finds and what is going on with her blog.
How Mavis Follows the Rest of Us
Mavis keeps up with other blogs through Google Reader . At first, she would bookmark every blog she was interested in, this method was difficult and found blogs easier to read and keep up with by using Google Reader.
On a typical day follows about 2 blogs, but at the end of the week she catches up on all of the her subscribed blogs.
Thoughts On Starting a Blog
Mavis hesitated starting her blog for fear that she would write something and no one would be interested in reading it. Mavis had lots of help and motivation from fellow bloggers including Luckie Daniels at Our Georgia Roots and Allum Spence at Spence-Lowry Family History. She found such joy in reading their blogs and felt she wanted to do the same for her own family history research.
Mavis encourages anyone working on their family history to start blogging. “It’s not that hard to get started and you would be amazed at the dividends you receive in return.” Mavis has connected with unknown cousins who had come across her blog as well as some known cousins whom she had never met or seen in a while.
Blogging has also given Mavis the opportunity to connect with an entire community of fellow genealogy bloggers that she never knew existed. Mavis expresses, “This along with all of the genealogy and genealogy related sites, has been a wonderful addition to my current research efforts.”
