May I Introduce To You . . . Lynn Fowlston

Lynn Fowlston

I have the pleasure of introducing you to Lynn Fowlston and her blog, Windows of the Past, described as, “. . . My Family Tree. I have always loved to dig back in history so being retired I decided to try my hand at genealogy and trace my family tree. What an interesting journey I have been on. I have traveled the world over and have never left my desk. This has become quite a hobby for me. I am neither a professional or get paid to do this. It’s just fun for me to search and dig back in history.”

Lynn was born in York, Nebraska and now resides in Tennessee.  She has been doing genealogy for about three years now.

How Lynn Got Started in Genealogy

“After I retired I kept thinking I want to know what is back in my linage. Always being told I was German and Irish, I found out I was German and English.  I was very green at this and all I had was my grandparent’s names starting with Family Search.  I moved on up to Ancestry and the message boards. Finding an e-book of the Hurlbut family really helped me in the end but the top line of all German was very hard but managed to finally get most of it. After being estranged from my family for over 40 years, I finally connected again with those that are still alive, thanks to Ancestry and the message boards.”

Lynn’s Thoughts on Blogging

“I just got my blog started. I started to do the stats first and then started a family tree so family could see it there.”

Lynn’s Favorite Blog Post

“Being that I just got it started, my favorite would be ‘Faces from the Past.’”

Lynn’s Tips for New Bloggers

“Don’t give up. I still have a few that I have not been able to find but I haven’t lost hope, and do not follow every shaky leaf. When I first started I thought they have to be right, according to TV commercials, until I had to wipe out one whole entire line. Now I do a lot of double and triple checking before entering an ancestor.”

How Genealogy Has Improved Lynn’s Life

“It helps me realize just what they all went through to get here to the United States and the faith they all had and how easy we have it today compared to then.”

Lynn’s Favorite Ancestor

“I would have to say my grandfather Kahler – He held to the old way of life and had a way about him that he never had to spank you to mind. All he had to do was talk to you.”

What Lynn Loves Most About Genealogy

“I have always loved to dig back in history and for years did pedigree’s on dogs (found out that was easier searching than humans ;-)) and now this has become a hobby, I have gone from my family, to trying to help others, and indexing for Family Search.”

Lynn’s Time Capsule Message

“Look to the future but don’t forget your past– Your ancestors are the ones that paved the way for your future.”
