I have the great pleasure of introducing Katrina McQuarrie of the Kick-Ass Genealogy blog!
Katrina’s blog has unique how-to tips that can help take your family history research, writing, and presentation to the next level. She posts ideas on how to research family history unlike anywhere else on the web!
With easy, unique, and very straightforward presentations, Katrina’s fresh twist on family history is simple to apply whether you are a new or an experienced genealogist. Katrina’s blog does not focus so much on her lineage, but mainly on instructional techniques.
Having worked on her genealogy since she was a child, Katrina says that as well both of her parents have been doing genealogy for as far back as she can remember. With her maternal and paternal genealogy somewhat complete, Katrina has spent time researching and focusing on her husband’s family line for about the last two years.
Katrina’s Blog and Her Family
Katrina’s family thinks her blog is “nifty” but really does not read or follow her blog. Her sister is the exception: she is subscribed to Katrina’s RSS feed and is responsible for repairing all the WordPress codes that Katrina breaks!
How Katrina Follows the Rest of Us
Google Reader is Katrina’s choice for following genealogy blogs. She has about nineteen blogs that she is currently following. Katrina uses email to follow other types of blogs, which include personal finance and lifestyle design. Eventually, Katrina would like to offer a value-added option on her blog so that her readers are able to receive her posts via email.
Katrina’s Thoughts on Starting Her Blog
Katrina wasn’t sure which was more terrifying: the fear that nobody would read her blog or that everyone would read it and she would lack the discipline to keep writing. As it turns out, she keeps up very well!
Like many genealogy bloggers, Katrina had initial hesitations starting her blog, even though her day job involves tech support. Having to learn about web hosting, coding, using blog software and site design was quite daunting. Additional hesitations have included concerns over her abilities as a writer and being able to attract readers especially since Katrina’s future plans include ways to monetize her blog.
Katrina feels strongly about the importance of making sure genealogy is fun for newer enthusiasts. She started blogging, largely owing to the fact that she had gone through all the standard “how-to” websites and found their content basic and boring.
Katrina wanted something to help her push her family history skills a bit further. Out of frustration she decided to be the resource she was seeking! Katrina loves to hear from her readers letting her know what the outcome was when using the tools and tips from her blog, or asking questions for clarity if necessary and making suggestions for the future.

Katrina has done an outstanding job on her blog and I know she will attract many readers with her unique style and experience. Please welcome Katrina, stop by her Kick-Ass Genealogy blog, and leave a comment to let her know you were there. The tools and tips she offers, really do “kick-ass” and her blog title fits perfectly!
