I have the pleasure of introducing you to Kathleen Brandt of a3Genealogy – Accurate Accessible Answers.
Kathleen’s mission: to be in the forefront of sharing informative, historical, and genealogical information to clients and to other genealogists. Kathleen has been doing genealogy for over 10 years and is a professional genealogist, speaker, and freelance writer. She has published several family books and articles, has experience in documentation retrieval and research, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) analysis, as well as family and lineage research.
Kathleen is currently performing genealogy research and writing full-time. Previously, she spent 25 years in international corporate management and five years of teaching college Spanish, French and English writing courses. Being a multilingual speaker, Kathleen can translate Spanish and French records. She also has experience researching German and Swedish records.
Kathleen’s Family and Her Blog
Kathleen has meet many new distant cousins through her blog, but her immediate family has little interest in the historical facts of genealogical work. There are some family members who enjoy the documentations, photos, and information that she posts on their direct line. A family bi-annual review at the family reunion seems to satisfy them.
A few family members do like to read the headlines and titles on her blog posts, on Facebook, or Twitter. Those that follow regularly are other historians who wish to link their family to one of the ancestors Kathleen has researched. She often uses her own family research to illustrate a point or case study of a genealogical concept in her blog. Those family historians are able to meet extended cousins and collaborate on data and stories on related family branches.
How Kathleen Follows the Rest of Us
Kathleen uses Google Reader to follow about 50 blogs regularly. She also uses GeneaBloggers’ Genealogy Blog Listing to introduce herself to new blogs of interest. Kathleen also likes to read “Follow Friday” tweets for recommendations on new blogs to follow and participates regularly in the Daily Blogging Prompt: “Follow Friday” on her own blog.
Kathleen’s Thoughts on Blogging
Kathleen originally had concerns about the amount of time it would take to blog and maintain a site. As a Blogger user, she quickly realized that maintaining the site was not an issue at all.
Kathleen’s concerns then shifted to “will I have enough topics to write about?” She realized this too was a wasted concern, as genealogy topics seem to be infinite. Kathleen tends to find posting topics on a client at hand; or a question that is asked through prospective clients or other blogs, or something she may have learned that week. At times, Kathleen will use references on blogs, or news clips as “teachable moments.”
