Today, I have the great pleasure of introducing you to Jennifer Woods and her blog, Climbing My Family Tree, described as, “ . . . I blog about my genealogical journey – brick walls, great finds, favorite pictures, genea-trips, and things I’ve learned.”
How Jennifer Got Started in Genealogy
Jennifer is originally from Harstine Island, Washington and currently resides in Texas, “My husband is in the Army, so we have called many places our home over the years.”
Jennifer recently left the Air Force and is adjusting to being a mom and homemaker; “I started doing genealogy soon after my first daughter was born. I was looking for something to do during the day (other than change diapers!) and I happened upon a copy of Family Tree Maker and was hooked immediately. I’ve been addicted ever since. There have been lulls in my genealogical journey (I’ve had four more kids since then) but I’ve kept up with it pretty consistently over the years.”
Jennifer’s Family and Her Blog
“I don’t know that anyone in my family is actually a ‘blog reader.’ My mom is technologically challenged (sorry Mom, but it’s true!) and I think that most of my family members only read when I send them a link to a specific post. I could be wrong though. Maybe some of them are lurking and I just don’t know it!”
How Jennifer Follows the Rest of Us
Jennifer prefers to use Google Reader to read her favorite blogs, “I like that I can categorize them, because I read blogs on a variety of topics – genealogy, home schooling, photography, etc. and it’s easier for me to keep them separated. I don’t receive any posts via email, because I can barely wade through my email as it is!”
Jennifer has about 400 blogs in her Google Reader right now. There are about 20 or so that she may read on a daily basis and the rest she checks about once a week.
Jennifer’s Thoughts on Blogging
Jennifer created a genealogy blog out of wanting a way to share her passion for genealogy and also to get her pictures and information out there to share with people who are interested, “I’ve always thought of myself as climbing from branch to branch along my family tree, so I chose the name ‘Climbing My Family Tree.’”
Jennifer’s main blogging concern was, “That no one would want to read my blog. I hesitated a little, because I wasn’t sure that I would have the time to consistently write. I didn’t want to start something that I wasn’t going to follow through with. Sometimes I am short on time, but I don’t ever feel like blogging is a chore.”
What Jennifer Loves Most About Genealogy
“Oh, that’s a hard one. I love being a genealogy detective – solving little mysteries that always lead to more. I also love being able to place my ancestors into the bigger historical picture.”
Jennifer’s Time Capsule Message
