May I Introduce To You . . . Cheryl Palmer

May I introduce you to Cheryl Fleming Palmer of the Heritage Happens blog.

There really is a lot happening at Cheryl’s blog and I am very pleased to feature Heritage Happens this week.  Join me in wishing Heritage Happens a happy blogiversary which is one year old today!

I always look forward to Cheryl’s posts and I know her readers do as well.  Each time Cheryl posts, she brings us great information about her thoughts, her genealogy research and her experiences. A recent post Updating my photo CDs reminds us to also take a look at our photos and how we have stored them!  I particularly like Cheryl’s series: Those Places Thursdays in which she shares photos of each home in which she has lived.

Cheryl authors two blogs, Heritage Happens and Graveyard Rabbit of South Alameda.  Heritage Happens was one of the first that I came upon as I discovered there was an entire world of genealogy bloggers! In fact, Cheryl is the reason why I created my own blog Ginisology.  She is truly an inspiration and her encouragement and support has been endless.   I also had the honor of meeting Cheryl at the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree in Burbank last June and it was great to meet my mentor in person.

How Cheryl Began Blogging

Cheryl began following several of the genealogy blogging “old timers,” meaning blogs run by luminaries such as Jasia (Creative Gene), Miriam (AnceStories: The Stories of My Ancestors), Footnote Maven (footnoteMaven) and  Randy Seaver (Genea-Musings). Cheryl witnessed the camaraderie that these bloggers shared while posting about blog carnivals, memes, daily blogging themes and especially the GeneaBloggers Games. Cheryl had a strong desire to organize her own genealogy research, thoughts and stories and get her family history out in public.  She then became inspired to start her own blog in the form of Heritage Happens.

Even to this day, Cheryl’s biggest fear about starting her blog is not structuring her posts properly, having errors, and posting on a subject of little interest to her readers. I can totally relate and most likely many other genealogy bloggers have some of the same fears.

Cheryl has expressed how happy she is that she started her blog since it has helped her accomplish many things.  She hasn’t had much time to participate in carnivals lately but is looking forward to starting once again soon.  Cheryl also expressed that genealogy/family history bloggers are the best in the world.  She wants to thank all her readers for being so helpful, friendly and supportive and Cheryl tries to be helpful, friendly and supportive in return. Cheryl is very proud to be a member of the geneablogger community and hopes to be here for a very long time.  Personally, I am proud and thankful that Cheryl is here for things would not be the same without her!

And I love Cheryl’s trademark closing: Thanks for stopping by! Wishing you success in all of your genealogical treasure hunts!

Cheryl’s Family and Her Blog

Cheryl’s family completely supports her in whatever she does, if  blogging makes her happy,  they say: “go for it, whatever makes you happy!”

I know Cheryl has many followers in the genealogy blogging world (including me, a very faithful follower).  Cheryl shares that she has more friend followers than family followers and that most of her family does not follow her blog. Her sister (who does have her own blog but it is not genealogy-related) stops by every in now and then and will email questions to Cheryl about what she reads.  Much of Cheryl’s family spends the entire day on the computer but they seem to have very little interest in family history.  If they really want to know anything, they always ask Cheryl!

How Cheryl Follows the Rest of Us

Cheryl used to follow other blogs using Bloglines, however she has now found it easier and more convenient to use Google Reader which has all the blogs she follows in one place.  Cheryl says that still has a few stragglers in Bloglines but is slowly moving all blogs over to Google Reader. Ideally, She would like to have two Google Reader accounts, one for each of the type of blogs that she reads.

Each day is different but on a typical day Cheryl might follow five, twenty or thirty blogs, and some days, none! We are all familiar with the “none” day: life, work and daily things take up time and you are not able to get your fix reading your favorite blogs!

Check out Cheryl’s blog Heritage Happens and  you will be in for a wonderful reading experience.  Cheryl loves to hear from her genea-friends, so please head on over and leave her a comment to let her know you stopped by.
