I have the pleasure of introducing you to Charles Bourland of The Getting Started With Genealogy Book blog: Tips on genealogy research and writing family histories. Charles offers these great tips on his blog: family history, computers, genealogy books, genealogy software, genealogy tips, history, humor and much more.
How Charles Got Started
Charles has been researching his family history for 15 years now, all-starting with a trip to Florida.
Charles was born and raised in West Virginia and at the time living in St. Louis, MO. While driving to visit family in Florida, he stopped to visit the Vicksburg Civil War Memorial grounds. There, a Ranger gave him a copy of a pamphlet to describe the effort of his grandfather and grandmother, to erect West Virginia’s statue. Charles discovered his grandfather was wearing blue, not gray as he had thought. Wanting to know more, Charles started researching his family history.
Charles Family and His Blog
Charles’ family has little interest in genealogy and researching their family history. His wife is glad that he has a hobby for retirement, but his children have zero interest at the moment. Charles is hoping that maybe one day they will. His family is impressed that there is life after retirement though!
Charles did receive a very touching letter of thanks from a cousin. He felt that Charles had brought home the great importance and true meaning of Leaving a Legacy behind for our descendants and extended family.
How Charles Follows the Rest of Us
Charles uses Google Reader to stay up to date on the latest genealogy blog posts. He may follow about two or three blogs a day, the numbers increase as time goes on.
Charles teaches a class at a local university in Continuing Education. Most of his students follow his genealogy blog regularly. Charles is a user of the “Reunion for Macintosh” software for his family tree data; many users of Reunion are consistent in following him also.
Charles Thoughts on Blogging
Other than needing a bit of help from his technically oriented son with his WordPress blog, Charles had no concerns when it came to blogging . . . he jumped right in.
Charles started his blog because he felt it was difficult to locate blogs that are purely genealogy oriented. In Charles own words, “with the exception of a few self-serving postings, my blog should be useful to anyone deeply into the hobby.”
