Genealogy Blogging Beat – Monday 7 April 2014

Billie Holiday was born on 7 April 1915 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as Eleanora Fagan, nicknamed “Lady Day” and is considered by many jazz critics to have been the greatest jazz singer ever recorded. In her 26-year career, despite having received no formal training, she demonstrated a unique style with sophisticated and dramatic phrasing. Among her best-known songs are “Lover Man,” “God Bless the Child,” “Don’t Explain” and “Strange Fruit.” She died at New York, New York, 17 July 1959.
