This Is The Face of Genealogy

Imagine my surprise after I stepped out for a few hours to visit with family and I came home to an avalanche of posts telling the LAWeekly and the world what the true face of genealogy looks like.  Just look at the posts submitted below and you’ll see not only what genealogy is in the images, but in the action as well. See our previous post for the backstory on why a call to action was needed.

Talk about a sense of community, talk about coming together to right a wrong.  Our ancestors had many challenges where they decided to take action and band together. Granted their methods may not have had the supersonic speed of social media and the Internet, but they understood that it takes community to get things done.

Thank you to all those who responded. The short term effect: the LAWeekly has removed the insidious photo and replaced it with one of the SCGS Jamboree App. The long term effect: too soon to tell but one thing I know is that genealogists and family historians are some of the smartest, kindest, funniest and most sincere folks I know. And I wouldn’t want it any other way.

About Thomas MacEntee

What happens when a “tech guy” with a love for history gets laid off during The Great Recession of 2008? You get Thomas MacEntee, a genealogy professional who’s also a blogger, educator, author, social media connector, online community builder and more. Thomas was laid off after a 25-year career in the information technology field, so he started his own genealogy-related business called High Definition Genealogy. He also created an online community of over 3,000 family history bloggers known as GeneaBloggers. His most recent endeavor, Hack Genealogy, is an attempt to “re-purpose today’s technology for tomorrow’s genealogy.” Thomas describes himself as a lifelong learner with a background in a multitude of topics who has finally figured out what he does best: teach, inspire, instigate, and serve as a curator and go-to-guy for concept nurturing and inspiration. Thomas is a big believer in success, and that we all succeed when we help each other find success.

  1. Way to go Thomas and all those who replied. Was going to respond myself, but it appears that the work has been done. Power to the people!

  2. I saw it right after Bill commented and wrote to the newspaper in two areas for them to fix this.
It made them look very uneducated and only belittled them not us.
Please be aware it was not the LA TIMES but the LA Weekly.

I am very pleased to see the torch picked up and carried by bloggers everywhere not just here on the west coast.
