Blog Action Day 2010

Blog Action Day 2010

Join GeneaBloggers and other genealogy bloggers as we participate in Blog Action Day 2010. We’ll join thousands of other bloggers writing about this year’s theme: water.

Past Participation

In October 2008, with the theme being poverty, the genealogy bloggers convinced the folks at Blog Action Day to create a “genealogy’ category so we could participate. Many of us posted about how poverty had affected our ancestors and helped shape our family history.  My own example is posted here at Destination: Austin Family.  For 2009, many members of GeneaBloggers joined over 7,600 other bloggers and posted about the theme of climate change.

Water and Your Ancestors

Now on October 15, 2010, it is your chance to participate. Post about how water impacted your ancestors: Did they pursue a livelihood tied to the ocean or rivers as fishermen, whalers or other professions? Did the lack of water or a drought force your ancestors to migrate to other parts of the country or the world? While we think of water pollution as a modern problem, were there instances in your family’s history? Think about the access to clean water for your ancestors as opposed to access today and the impact it had.

How To Participate

To participate you must do the following before October 15, 2010:

  • Enter the URL of your blog and other information including your email address. Also, make sure you select the Genealogy category for your blog.
  • You will receive a confirmation email to which you must respond in order to register your blog.

Then on October 15, 2010, post about water. GeneaBloggers will display a special roll-up widget listing all the related posts from GeneaBloggers members.  This is a great way to interact with others in the blogging community, especially those outside of the genealogy world!

About Thomas MacEntee

What happens when a “tech guy” with a love for history gets laid off during The Great Recession of 2008? You get Thomas MacEntee, a genealogy professional who’s also a blogger, educator, author, social media connector, online community builder and more. Thomas was laid off after a 25-year career in the information technology field, so he started his own genealogy-related business called High Definition Genealogy. He also created an online community of over 3,000 family history bloggers known as GeneaBloggers. His most recent endeavor, Hack Genealogy, is an attempt to “re-purpose today’s technology for tomorrow’s genealogy.” Thomas describes himself as a lifelong learner with a background in a multitude of topics who has finally figured out what he does best: teach, inspire, instigate, and serve as a curator and go-to-guy for concept nurturing and inspiration. Thomas is a big believer in success, and that we all succeed when we help each other find success.
